Seasonal Study Guide for Unveiling: Early Autumn
In early autumn, from the Autumnal Equinox
(September 21st) through Samhain (Halloween, October 31st), we
are drawn inward. For all that we remain very "outwardly
focused," we note the shorter days, the cooler nights, the
migration of the birds, and the nesting of squirrels. We shift our
patterns; cooking heartier meals. Sometimes we return from a summer
break to the structure and discipline of school. Yet while we are
involved with school activities, home repairs, and a multitude of
interests and projects, a part of us seeks quiet.
Our minds, going more inward and contemplative, begin to broach
our own "dark side" - paralleling the descent of Inanna.
Imagine that you take a warm afghan out to cover your legs, as you
get some September warmth on a Sunday afternoon. Or, coming home
from work, you take the lid off your crockpot, and settle in with
a hearty home-cooked stew, a glass of wine, a little fire, and a
good book.

Authors Diane Wolkstein
and Samuel Noah Kramer, Ph.D., created this eloquent yet
fascinating and very readable depiction of Inanna, the ancient Sumerian Goddess.
Based on Kramer's translations of original
source material - Sumerian cunieform inscriptions - Inanna's story depicts
a healthy young woman whose sexual interest would be at home on "Sex in the City."
She is courted by the charismatic Dumuzi, whom she weds, and with whom she
shares rulership of her land in ancient Sumer. Then, she undertakes a
"descent to the Underworld", changing not only her life,
but her entire kingdom.

The Dark Side of the Light Chasers |

Author Debbie Ford's book touched Alay'nya to the core
when she read it while refining Unveiling chapters in 1999. "I knew this would have
a place in Unveiling."
We often know how we are "seeking the light." We
desire more knowledge, awareness, insight, compassion. We desire healing for ourselves
and for outhers. What we don't often know - but is essential to our growth - is our
own "dark side." Read this in conjunction with Unveiling's Part VII, and with Wolkstein
and Kramer's Inanna.
